Mass Production: A Creative Experience

Nothing is created without raw material. Whether a physical creation or an abstract idea, creativity relies on ingredients we collect over the years, sometimes consciously and often unconsciously. This is why observation is a core skill of creativity: the more we observe and explore the world around us, the richer our pantry of ingredients for future creative ideas.

One of the practices I love is slowing down to observe things that seem ordinary. When you observe something mindfully, you will likely find many surprising things that make it unique and intriguing.

Zooming in helps us uncover these hidden gems everywhere. Pick a spoon, a pencil, your phone, an old shirt — any seemingly ordinary object — and observe it closely. Notice its details. Look for imperfections, the signs of time, or the signs of interaction with other objects. Find what makes this specific item one of a kind.

To make the most of this experience, find a place without distractions, and observe the object for at least five minutes. Even if you don’t see anything unique about it at first, continue observing. Slowing down significantly shifts what you’re able to see.

Over time, you’ll look at anything more attentively and see details others ignore. Beyond providing more ingredients for creative ideas, you’ll appreciate everything you encounter and find magic in the most ordinary things.
