The Curator: A Creative Experience

An exhibition in a gallery or a museum is never a random collection of artworks. What you see is the result of deliberate research, selection, and sequencing. It’s the curator’s responsibility to select artworks that are notable in themselves and that, together, form a coherent narrative. The curator is typically behind the scenes, but when you experience an exhibition, their impact is often just as dramatic as the artists’.

The Curator creative experience is an invitation to design your own exhibition. You don’t need an art degree or any special expertise, and you have an infinite collection of artworks to play with.

There are two ways to start working on your exhibition. The first is to pick a theme, a common thread, or an idea you wish to express, and conduct some online research to find artworks that support your narrative. Another way in is to start with an artwork you love or a random artwork you find online. Research it and let it inspire the theme or message of your exhibition. In a sense, this artwork will be the center of your exhibition, but as you research other pieces, you might realize it was merely a trigger — the core of your idea was waiting somewhere else.

When you have enough artworks, decide how to arrange them. Imagine the audience’s journey as they walk through the exhibition space. Don’t focus only on the visuals. Explore the background of each artwork and the artist who created it. Finally, write a brief text that will guide the audience as they enter the exhibition.

In many ways, this experience is similar to any creative exploration. You might start with an idea, or you might discover one through a random find; an idea can shape your journey, but your journey almost always shapes your idea. You explore and curate, then arrange what you find to create new meaning.
